The Trial By Franz Kafka Summary
Franz Kafka criticized the legal system through this novel. There, I am just sharing my takeaways after finishing this novel. The plot starts with the arrival of two police officers at Joseph’s gate. It was Joseph’s 30 birthday. He worked at a nearby bank. The officers accused him of an unknown crime and arrested him. He was unaware of his crime. He was innocent. After some time, the police released Joseph. He was upset.
He discussed the scenario with his neighbors. He told to Fraulein. On that day, he kissed her. The next time, Joseph visited the court. The judge told him that his case would take time. After a week, Joseph reached the court without notice. He found nobody was there. He saw every corner of the court. His heart was tired of the court building. He reached back into the fresh air. The next day. Joseph heard those two police officers outside his apartment. They informed him that the court insulted them on the illegal detaining of Joseph. This incident shocked Joseph.
Joseph met his uncle Karl. He met a famous lawyer Herr Huld. He took charge of Joseph’s case. Joseph also tried to flirt with Huld’s maid. His uncle told him this would worsen his case. Joseph was upset. He lost most of his bank clients. He met Titorelli who was a painter found In court. He informed Joseph about the possibility of his case. Joseph was tired of his lawyer. He wanted to fire him but people told him to calm down. His case stressed him.
On one occasion, he was tasked with helping an Italian visitor at the nearby cathedral. On meeting. he was a priest. He called Joseph by name and told him the ‘’Before The Law’’ story. It was about a man who waited before the court for justice but the gatekeeper stopped him. You can read the full review of this novel on my website also.
Well, the story ends on the morning of Joseph’s thirty-first birthday. The two police officers who came last time appear again. They caught Joseph and shifted him to a far place. They took his life. Joseph kneeled before the justice system. His final words were’’ like a dog’’.
The author criticized the justice system in society through this novel. They accused Joseph of an unknown crime. He was not being informed. Further, they took his time. They stressed him. This had made him depressed. It’s quite common in today’s world. If we notice, we will see justice is not available to many people in modern society. Many people lost their precious years in search of justice.
- Kafka also criticized the bureaucracy in the novel. You will love a parable in the book that was about Before The Law. It’s another elegant work on the justice system.
I learned these themes:
It’s a common theme in the story. Joseph K was accused of an unknown crime. He was feeling guilty all the time.
The author discussed the cons of the legal system. It had disturbed Joseph’s lifestyle.
The system shown in the novel seems like a jungle. It was free from transparency and merit. There was no investigation of the case.
No one had discussed this theme. It’s common in Kafka’s writing style. It seems most of his characters were looking for their purpose in this strange world. They were struggling for their rights.
- We need to fight against the odds.
- It’s good to stand for your rights.
- We need to educate the people in the legal system.
The Trail By Frank Kafka introduced me to a man who was lonely against society. He was the victim of an unknown crime. He never knew what he did. The legal system labeled him guilty. He was fighting against all those odds to prove his innocence.
- Overall, I loved this book. You will find themes of guilt and corruption in this novel.
- The ending of the novel was up to the readers which fascinated me.
- It seems Kafka had prompted his other book ‘’Before the Law’ also in this novel. It provides a great amount of content on the legal system.
- The content of this book looks quite relatable in this era.
